Text Box: On Friday, December 2, 2005,  Mayor John Cook
helped GEM'S GEMS officially give away our 100,000th
children's book.  This event took place at Ascarate
Elementary on Alameda Ave.  Mayor Cook played his
guitar (He's good!) and read a story to the third and
fourth graders.  Then he visited some classrooms.
Jim Reed from the Kiwanis Club and Ann Allen from
Western Refining joined us in the celebration.
Text Box: GEM'S GEMS is now working with John Hurst as a technology
consultant.  He has helped us choose a new computer system (Thanks to
a grant from the Mt. Franklin Kiwanis Club.)  Soon we'll be spiffing up our
Website, faxing, making DVD's and in general joining the 21st century!

Text Box: Thousands Of New Books Given Away

We have given away thousands of new books from

First Book - National Book Bank.  People working with

a variety of schools, agencies, churches, and other organizations involved

with children picked up cartons of books.  Many of these were given as

Christmas presents to children who would probably not have received any

books at Christmas (or not much else for that matter).
